Walk-A-Dog-A-Thon

Based on all the feedback from our 16th Walk-a-dog-a-thon,
the change of venue to the lovely grounds of the Valley Rehabilitation
Centre in Waterville was a good decision. It provided lots of room
for fun activities enjoyed by many of our 90+ participants after
their walk. We are very grateful to the staff of the Centre as well
for hosting our K-9 Canteen.
Each year the committee tries to
add more fun for participants. This year a P.A. system was added
so there was better information sharing for participants and lively
music to add to the festive spirit. Our ever popular mascot Muttly
enjoyed dancing, being hugged and photographed throughout the day,
much to the delight of all. The introduction of free fun competitions
for walkers proved to be very popular as well.
Close to 100 walkers arrived toting
filled pledge sheets and excited dogs. Also exciting was the arrival
of 2 new teams of walkers, the Surgical Angels
Team from VRH and the Phinney's Friends
of Felines Team also from Kentville. Rumor has it that VRH is
planning on having 2 teams next year.
The contributions of all participants
were vital to the record setting amount of $8,547.87 in this event.
Our sincere gratitude is extended to each and everyone for their
support.

Rally
O
The second year of our Rally Obedience
Competition saw an increase in entries as more dog owners are taking
classes and enjoying this opportunity to showcase their progress
following their regular obedience training. Judge Judy Barteaux,
our Rally-O instructor, selected Janice Redden from Windsor and
dog Brook as the winner of the Novice A class and again as the winner
of the Novice B class with her other dog Kyle. While winning is
fun, entrants were happy to show off their skills and to help with
a worthy cause at the same time. Since any dog is eligible, many
walkers tried out the fun match and decided to sign up for the next
classes.

The Walk-a-dog-a-thon is the Kings
County SPCA's signature event. It is the result of many hours of
planning by the committee and the support of dozens of volunteers
and businesses to make it a success. The Board of Directors sincerely
thanks Committee Chair Joanne Munsie and everyone involved for their
generous efforts on the behalf of the animals. We look forward to
everyone's continued support and hope that more and more pet owners
come to this annual event to share a day of fun and frolic while
funding the work of the SPCA in our community.
